Defence congratulates Defence 2020 students

Vice Chief of the Defence Force, Lieutenant General David Hurley, today congratulated students participating in the Defence 2020 National Participation Challenge (NPC) at Old Parliament House in Canberra.

“The Defence 2020 initiative aims to increase awareness and understanding of the role the ADF has within the Australian community,” LTGEN Hurley said.

The 26 students, from across Australia, were chosen to participate in the NPC on the basis of submissions they made to the Defence 2020 topic: Is the Spirit of ANZAC Relevant to the ADF and Australian Society Today?

“The NPC has provided these students the opportunity to see firsthand what the Australian Defence Force (ADF) today is all about. The students have displayed a remarkable drive and understanding of the often complex Defence and social issues,” LTGEN Hurley said.

The NPC challenges the students to critically analyse information and come away with their own perspective of this year's topic. They will take this experience back to their schools and help promote greater understanding of Defence and the ADF among their peers, and within their communities.

“I congratulate all students who have participated, in the Defence 2020 program in 2010, and especially those students chosen for the National Challenge. They have represented themselves and their schools with great distinction,” he said.

The program also seeks to raise awareness of the ADF among school-aged students and identify the organisation as sharing its values with the Australia
