Funeral service of Lance Corporal Jared MacKinney

A military funeral service was held at Ashgrove Baptist Church in Brisbane to farewell Lance Corporal Jared MacKinney. Lance Corporal MacKinney was killed in action in an intense fire-fight with insurgents during a patrol in the Deh Rawud region of Afghanistan while serving with the Australian 1st Mentoring Task Force.

Lance Corporal MacKinney was remembered at the funeral service by his family and friends that concluded with a three volley salute from a firing party as his coffin left the chapel. The service was attended by the Prime Minister, Julia Gillard; Leader of the Opposition, Tony Abbott; Minister for Defence, Senator John Faulkner; Premier of Queensland, Anna Bligh; Chief of the Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston; Chief of Army, Lieutenant General Ken Gillespie and the Regimental Sergeant Major of the Army, Stephen Ward. The guard of honour, escorts and bearer party consisted of military personnel from the 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment.

Lance Corporal MacKinney was 28 years of age and is survived by his daughter Annabell, wife Beckie, father Ian and mother Jane. At the time of the service, his wife was expecting a son, to be named Noah Jared in honour of his father.
