Veteran visit to No. 36 Squadron

World War Two veteran Gurney Batts re-visited his wartime unit of No. 36 Squadron at its present day home of RAAF Base Amberley on September 29. Taking the opportunity to tour the squadron, Mr Batts saw firsthand one of the massive C-17As currently flown by the Squadron. These aircraft are the descendents of the Douglas DC-2s and DC-3s flown by No. 36 Squadron in New Guinea and across Australia in the early days of World War Two. Mr Batts was involved with the establishment of No. 36 Squadron and participated in its first war-time airdrop in Papua New Guinea, during the battle for Kokoda.
