ADF joins Regional Defence HQ for Exercise Bersama Shield 10
Senior officers of the United Kingdom, Australian, New Zealand, Singapore and Malaysian defence forces have been working together at regional coalition headquarters to plan and execute a major military exercise that involved more than 59 combat aircraft, seven warships and 2,500 personnel.
More than 50 military officers from the region concentrated at Head Quarters - Integrated Area Defence Systems (HQIADS) at Butterworth Air Base in Malaysia, for Exercise Bersama Shield, which provided them with the opportunity to develop their collective understanding and application of joint military operations.
More than a dozen Royal Australian Air Force and Royal Australian Navy personnel worked in the HQIADS during Bersama Shield which was conducted by the Five Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA) member countries on the Malaysian peninsula and the South China Sea during 26 April to 7 May.
Ten Royal Australian Air Force and Royal Australian Navy personnel worked in the HQ IADS during the annual exercise that aims to promote regional engagement and enhance security in Southeast Asia.
The exercise challenged the Australian Defence Force staff officers and their FPDA counter-parts to integrate the groupings different combat aircraft such as Malaysia’s Russian-made MiG-29 Fulcrums and Australia’s F/A-18 Hornets while networked with modern guided missile frigates for a range of tactical missions.
Australian Defence Force assets involved in the exercise included eight F/A-18s from 75 Squadron, one AP-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft from 10 Squadron, HMA Ships Anzac and Success, and various support personnel from 324 Combat Support Squadron
The Commander of the Australian Contingent, Wing Commander Ken Robinson, said Exercise Bersama Shield provided the Air Force and the ADF with the opportunity to develop relationships with important regional partners while reinforcing Australia’s long-term commitment to regional capacity building.
He said the FPDA was established as a regional security initiative almost 40-years ago and has now evolved to be an integral part of Australia’s regional engagement strategy.
