ASM and UNMIS medal presentation ceremony to UN Military Observers of Australian Contingent 10

In a modest ceremony at the Commonwealth War Cemetery in Khartoum, Sudan, six ADF personnel have been recognised for their contribution to the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) over the last six months. The UN Military Observers (UNMOs) of Australian Contingent Ten (ASC10) were presented their Australian Service Medals and 'Sudan' Clasps, and the UNMIS medal following the completion of six months working at remote team sites across the south of Sudan.

The ASC10 UNMOs included MAJ Kyle Stewart, MAJ Ian Jones, CAPT Adam Crockett, LEUT Brandon Ikimau, CAPT Philippa Cleary and CAPT Daryl Munro.

Despite austere living conditions and significant cultural and professional challenges, the ADF UNMOs gained a quick reputation as being resolute in the field.

The commander of the Australian Contingent (COMASC), Lieutenant Colonel Tim Rudd, thanked the UNMOs for their work and reflected on the importance of their contribution to the UN Mission; "Thanks to their hard work, Australians are held in high regard within the UN". LTCOL Rudd went on to tell the attendees that the contribution of the ASC10 UNMOs had been instrumental during the recent presidential elections, a significant milestone in the history of contemporary Sudan.

The six new UNMOs of ASC11 looked on, as LTCOL Rudd also presented the ASC10 UNMO's with COMASC commendations for their contribution to UNMIS. "You can all be extremely proud of your efforts, and you have strengthened Australia's reputation of being among the most hard working and effective military staff within the mission."

The ASC11 UNMOs, MAJ Leonard Tracey, LEUT Alan Donovan, CAPT Neil Foster, CAPT David Craker, CAPT Steven Murcott and CAPT Phillip Matthysen will be deployed to their remote team sites at the start of June, and look forward to continuing to build the ADF's excellent reputation within UNMIS.
