Australian and British soldiers prepare for the official opening of the Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Military Cemetery
Australian and British soldiers prepare for the official opening of the Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Military Cemetery and the re-interment of the final and 250th soldier found in the mass grave at Pheasant Wood.
The honour guard and bearer party is comprised of members from both Australia’s Federation Guard and Britain’s 4th Battalion the Rifles and the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, due to the unknown identity of the soldier killed in the Battle of Fromelles.
The dedication of the cemetery marks the 94th anniversary of the costliest battle in Australian military history, with 5533 soldiers either killed, wounded, taken prisoner or missing in just 24 hours.
