US Marines and US Navy Seabees assist ISF refurbish community centre

Engineers from two nations put their backs into some heavy labour to refurbish a Dili community centre this week (22 June 10).

The work is part of a joint humanitarian expedition that will arrive in East Timor in August.

US Marine engineers and US Navy Seabees joined Australian sappers of the International Stabilisation Force (ISF) to re-render the walls of the community centre in East Timor’s capital.

It is expected a new concrete slab will be laid in the centre’s courtyard.

The community centre also will be the site of a medical capability exercise (MEDCAP).

The Marines are posted to the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (15MEU) and will conduct a series of joint exercises with ISF and the East Timorese Defence Force (F-FDTL).

This centre is not the first time US engineers have worked with ISF. The Seabees have personnel on a 10-month rotation in East Timor, and contributed their expertise in mentoring F-FDTL engineers at Los Palos.

The Seabees, F-FDTL and Australian engineers of the Defence Cooperation Program (DCP) finished fitting a new roof to the only operational dairy in East Timor on 19 June 2010.

It is hoped the refurbished dairy will have the capacity to commercially produce milk and cheese in the future.
