38SQN King Airs active around Australia

Agile and reliable transport is now on tap for Australian Defence Force (ADF) units, thanks to the growing fleet of King Airs at Townsville’s No. 38 Squadron.

The first three aircraft for the Squadron were transferred from Army Aviation in November 2009. Another five brand new aircraft will join the aircraft by July, the latest having just been delivered in February. All eight aircraft are leased from Hawker Pacific.

Nicknamed ‘Dingo Airlines’, the Squadron’s King Airs are working as an interim light transport replacement for the DHC-4 Caribou. The King Air is ideally suited to transporting ADF personnel across Australia and the greater region. It is more reliable and more efficient than its predecessor, and will serve as a convenient ‘stepping stone’ for pilots who may later transition to more advanced aircraft in the RAAF, including the Light Tactical Fixed Wing aircraft to be selected under Air 8000 phase 2.

No. 32 Squadron at RAAF Base East Sale also operates the King Air under lease from Hawker Pacific for School of Air Warfare training and other Air Force tasks.

The King Air’s entry to No. 38 Squadron service has already been recognised at the Australian Defence Magazine Defence Material Organisation (DMO) and Industry Team of the Year Awards on February 23.

DMO’s Training Aircraft Systems Programme Office, with industry partners Hawker Pacific, were awarded for Excellence in a Minor Acquisition.
