NSW Rural Fire Service Aviation training at RAAF Richmond

New South Wales Rural Fire Service (RFS) have conducted essential training at RAAF Base Richmond on Saturday, December 11, in preparation for the 2010-11 fire season.

The training involved up to 75 RFS volunteers establishing and supporting a firebase, used to support RFS fire fighting aircraft. The volunteers practiced refuelling live RFS aircraft, as well as winching of personnel to RFS aircraft.

The training also saw volunteers manage and load RFS aircraft with fire fighting foam and fire retardants. To offload the foam and retardants, RFS fire fighting aircraft conducted practice drops on grassland at Rickaby's Creek Drop Zone.

All instructors were members of RFS, with Air Force facilitating access to the RAAF Base and providing any necessary airfield support. Air Force is supported this activity under its Defence Assistance to the Civil Community guidelines.
