Funeral of Trooper Jason Brown

Special Air Service Regiment soldier Trooper Jason Brown was today farewelled by family and friends at the Queen of Peace Church, Sydney before being laid to rest at Castlebrook Cemetery.

Trooper Brown’s Sydney-based family was surrounded by friends and his Special Forces colleagues gathering to remember his life and military career.

The Prime Minister, Julia Gillard; Leader of the Opposition, Tony Abbott; Minister for Defence, Senator John Faulkner; Federal Member for Berowra, Philip Ruddock, Premier for New South Wales, Kristina Keneally; Vice Chief of the Defence Force, Lieutenant General David Hurley; Chief of Army, Lieutenant General Ken Gillespie, Special Operations Commander Australia, Major General Tim McOwan also attended the ceremony.

The 29-year-old was killed in action whilst serving with the Special Operations Task Group (SOTG) in Afghanistan, on Friday 13 August 2010. He died as a result of gun shot wounds during an engagement with Taliban insurgents in Northern Kandahar.

Trooper Brown was born in Sydney, NSW in 1981. He joined the Army on 13th June 2000 and following Recruit and Initial Employment Training, Trooper Brown was posted to the 1st Battalion Royal Australian Regiment. In 2004 he joined the 4th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment (Commando). On successful completion of the 2007 Selection Course, Trooper Brown became a member of the Special Air Service Regiment. This was his first tour to Afghanistan, although he had deployed previously on three occasions to East Timor.
