Defence Indigenous Development Program - Katherine NT

Project Manager for the Defence Indigenous Development Program (DIDP) and former Commanding Officer of NORFORCE Lieutenant Colonel Roger Bryett has visited the program's new trainees at the Katherine Rural College in the Northern Territory during their orientation phase to deliver a motivational opening address, and get to know the men of the 2010 program.

LTCOL Bryett said the opening address was to inspire the young indigenous men to keep on the program's full seven months, from his experience with NORFORCE and indigenous affairs.

"We're trying to bring the warrior ethos back to a culture that is recovering from a long period of sadness," he said.

"Through improved LLN standards, VET certifications self-esteem and personal development we're taking these young men from remote indigenous communities and giving them the self-confidence to walk proudly at home with strong cultural values and an understanding of the mainstream world."

Young indigenous men from remote areas across the Northern Territory and Kimberley regions are preparing for their seven-month journey to graduation on the 2010 Defence Indigenous Development Program (DIDP) with an orientation phase at the Katherine Rural College where trainees are settling into living away from home.

Through a culturally sensitive military structured training environment, the recruits and soldiers have come together for the three week phase to assist their integration into the program’s military and tertiary study environments, while living away from the familiarities of family and country.
