Patrolmen home after 44 years
Lieutenant Kenneth Hudson and Private Robert Moncrieff were swept away during a river crossing in West Kalimantan (Indonesia) while on patrol during the Indonesian Confrontation 21 March 1966.
An official Australian Army investigation to locate the bodies began in late 2008 and in early 2009 it received the full support of the Indonesian Armed Forces. Remains were recovered from two separate burial sites in West Kalimantan in October 2009.
The remains were formally handed over by the Indonesian National Defence Force (TNI) to Special Operations Commander Major General Tim McOwan in a ceremony held at the Australian Embassy in Jakarta 12 April 2010.
The remains were then returned to Australia. Ramp Ceremonies were conducted in Jakarta and another in Perth attended by family of the deceased. Members of the Special Air Service Regiment Association carried the remains of the men to the plane in Jakarta and escorted them home. A bearer party from the Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) received the remains on return to Australia and handed them on to their families for burial.
The funeral for Private Moncrieff was held in Perth at Campbell Barracks while Lieutenant Hudson was returned to Brisbane for burial with full military honours. Lieutenant Hudson and private Moncrieff are the last SAS soldiers missing in action to be found and returned home.
