Sea rescue operation

On 8 April 2010 the Australian Maritime Safety Authority requested HMAS Wollongong, under the control of Border Protection Command, respond to a distress call 148 kilometres east-south-east of Christmas Island.

HMAS Wollongong rendered assistance to the people on board the vessel who were concerned they were lost at sea. The passengers expressed a wish to come to Australia.

The vessel appeared to be seaworthy, however while under escort to Christmas Island when it began to flounder.

Some passengers were immediately transferred to HMAS Wollongong. Some passengers abandoned ship, ending up in the water.
