On 8 April 2010 the Australian Maritime Safety Authority requested HMAS Wollongong, under the control of Border Protection Command, respond to a distress call 148 kilometres east-south-east of Christmas Island.
HMAS Wollongong rendered assistance to the people on board the vessel who were concerned they were lost at sea. The passengers expressed a wish to come to Australia.
The vessel appeared to be seaworthy, however while under escort to Christmas Island it began to flounder.
Some passengers were immediately transferred to HMAS Wollongong. Some passengers abandoned ship, ending up in the water.
HMAS Wollongong is proceeding to Christmas Island with the passengers. While it appears that all the passengers are now safely aboard HMAS Wollongong, HMAS Broome has now been tasked to remain in the area until daylight to ensure there are no people left in the water.
