RAAF Tindal Crash Exercise
Exercise Hornet Down 09 was conducted as an operational exercise to test and adjust the Tindal Airfield Emergency Plan (AEP). The exercise aimed to ensure that local responding agencies are familiar with their roles and responsibilities whilst dealing with an aircraft crash. The exercise also tested the command and control element with the activation of the full Emergency Management Team (EMT) operating within the Emergency operation Centre. The AEP and EMT were further stretched with the activation of media and effected persons plans.
The Exercise scenario involved an F/A-18 Hornet having problems then the pilot having to eject before the aircraft crashed within 5 kilometres of the base. Unfortunately a vehicle carrying 4 RAAF members returning from a range shoot was hit by falling debris from the aircraft and injured to varying degrees.
The Airfield emergency plan was activated and elements including the Search and Rescue Helicopter, Base Fire, Medical Section, Security Police and others responded to the simulated emergency.
