Boomers coach boosts leadership skills

During an intensive coaching session with internationally recognised basketball coach, Barry Barnes, 20 participants of the Defence Indigenous Pre Recruitment Course (IPRC) were provided with inspirational words about sport, leadership, teamwork, discipline and life skills.

The course highlight was the intensive training session at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, led by Barry Barnes.

The session provided participants with the opportunity to boost essential career development skills, including motivation, discipline, physical fitness and communication skills.

On 2 March 2009, The Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, the Hon. Warren Snowdon MP, the Minister for Indigenous Affairs, the Hon. Jenny Macklin MP and the Minister for Employment Participation, the Hon. Brendan O’Connor MP, launched the second Defence IPRC. The Defence Indigenous Pre-Recruitment Course is one of the early initiatives to be rolled out from the Australian Defence Force (ADF) Indigenous Employment Strategy.

The current IPRC is based in Newcastle NSW. Participants have also been visiting Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial and the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra over the week 16 to 20 March. They will also get a taste of military life during their weekend visit to RAAF Base Wagga Wagga and the Army’s Recruit Training Centre at Kapooka NSW.
