Prime Minister of Iraq visit the Australian War Memorial

The Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) role in the reconstruction of Iraq was recognised at the Australian War Memorial (AWM) with a visit from the Prime Minister of the Republic of Iraq, H.E. Mr. Nuri Al Maliki.

In a moving and dignified ceremony in the Hall of Remembrance, where ADF personnel mounted a catafalque party, Mr al-Maliki laid a wreath as those in his entourage, ADF members and the media looked on, to the strains of the Last Post and Rouse.

Mr al-Maliki was then accompanied to the Roll of Honour where he viewed the section which honoured Australians who had fallen while on service in Iraq.

After signing the visitors’ book in front of the Pool of Reflection, he made a brief visit to the AWM gallery which commemorates conflicts from 1945 to the present, in which Australia has been involved.

At an afternoon tea address in the courtyard gallery, where a representative gathering was attended by some Army, Navy and Air Force personnel who had served in Iraq, Mr al-Maliki was warmly welcomed by the Chief of Army, Lieutenant General Ken Gillespie. In reply, he thanked those present for their outstanding efforts in Iraq.
