Minister for Defence attends NATO conference

The Minister for Defence, Senator John Faulkner, will travel overseas from 9 to 14 June 2009 to attend the Regional Command (South) Ministers’ Meeting in the Netherlands and a NATO Defence Ministers’ meeting in Belgium to advance key issues of importance to Australia’s defence interests.

At the Regional Command (South) Ministers’ Meeting, Maastricht, the Netherlands, Minister Faulkner will meet with his international counterparts from nations contributing to NATO-led operations in Regional Command (South) in Afghanistan to discuss coalition efforts in Southern Afghanistan.

The International Security Assistance Force has five regional commands that coordinate civil-military activities in Afghanistan. Regional Command (South) is responsible for military operations in southern Afghanistan and supports operations in Kandahar, Helmand, Oruzgan, Nimruz and Zabul provinces.

Senator Faulkner will then travel to Brussels in Belgium, where he will participate in a meeting on Afghanistan with Defence Ministers from NATO and non-NATO International Security Assistance Force contributing nations.

“I look forward to meeting my counterpart Defence Ministers for the first time and to have an opportunity for discussions with them regarding our shared commitment to Afghanistan,” Senator Faulkner said.

Senator Faulkner will be accompanied by the Chief of the Defence Force, ACM Angus Houston and the Secretary of the Department of Defence, Mr Nick Warner.
