Commemorating 50 years since tragic loss of Neptune

A ceremony and flyover at RAAF Base Richmond on 4 February has marked half a century since the tragic loss of a Neptune aircraft in the Hawkesbury.

The aircraft – A89-308 – was a Lockheed P-2V Neptune Maritime patrol aircraft, operated by No. 11 Squadron at RAAF Base Richmond.

The Neptune suffered a fire in the left engine, which lead to the aircraft crashing on the banks of the Hawkesbury River at Cornwallis (near Richmond). All eight crewmembers on board the aircraft were killed.
