Army Aboriginal Community Assistance Program
On 28 Aug 09, six indigenous trade trainees (selected by the community from within the local community) graduated with Certificate I in Engineering (Welding) recognised by TAFE QLD. The course consisted of the delivery of a 12 week employability skills program including vocational and non-vocational training including:
• Certificate 1 in Engineering (Welding)
• Basic carpentry
• Leadership training
• Alcohol/Drug awareness
• Literacy/Numeracy
• Computing/Multimedia skills.
The success of the training was based on a mentoring approach where two trainees from the local community were teamed up with an indigenous soldier from the 51st Far North Queensland Regiment, and an Army Reserve Tradesman from the 21st Construction Regiment. The aim is to provide lasting positive effects and valuable skills that can assist them throughout their life.
AACAP is a cooperative initiative between the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA) and Army to improve the environmental health conditions within remote Aboriginal communities. Each project has a construction component, a health component and a training component. Since AACAP commenced in 1997, Army has constructed over150 houses and other community buildings in 29 remote aboriginal communities across Australia.
