Army Aboriginal Community Assistance Program (AACAP) in Mapoon, Queensland

The Army Aboriginal Community Assistance Program (AACAP) is an Australian Government initiative established between the Commonwealth Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA) and the Army.

The aim of the program is to improve health and living conditions in remote indigenous communities utilising resources from FaHCSIA and expertise of the Army in providing infrastructure, health services and skills training to these communities. This year will be the 13th year of AACAP, and Mapoon will be the 35th community to receive its benefits.

The infrastructure work scheduled for Mapoon includes the construction of 3 three-bedroom houses, the upgrade and sealing of a 6km main community road, and the maintenance of community septic systems. These works will be delivered by Army Engineers from the 17th Construction Squadron based in Sydney.

Other key infrastructure items are the upgrade of the Mapoon water supply and treatment system and the installation of a 3G network that will provide mobile phone and wireless internet connectivity. Both of these items will be delivered by contractors and managed by the 19th Chief Engineer Works.

There is also a community health support program which will support existing health services, especially in areas such as dentistry, veterinary services and environmental health. A community health training program will include education on sports, fitness, first aid and healthy living.
