The Funeral of Private David Fisher

Thirty nine years after he was lost on an operation during the Vietnam War, the remains of Private David Fisher have finally been laid to rest to Australia.

Private Fisher, a member of the Special Air Service Regiment (SASR), was lost on 27 September 1969, when he fell from a rope suspended from a helicopter during a ‘hot extraction’ of his patrol. An immediate search was conducted by the helicopter, followed by air and ground searches, but no trace of Private Fisher was found.

His remains were cremated following a military funeral in Sydney on 14 October. The funeral marked the end of a long journey home that saw Private Fisher’s remains accompanied back from Hanoi in Vietnam by members of Private Fisher’s family, his former SAS comrades, the Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, the Hon. Warren Snowdon MP, Chief of Army, Lieutenant General Ken Gillespie and Special Operations Commander, Major General Timothy McOwan.

Private Fisher is the last of four Australian Army soldiers lost on operations during the Vietnam War to be brought back home.
