First C-17 Operational Aero Medical Evacuation Flight

The transport of wounded and injured ADF personnel from Afghanistan was the first time that a RAAF C-17 aircraft was used in an Aero Medical Evacuation (AME) role. The C-17 is ideal for this role due to its capacity to accommodate multiple patients. It allows reduced transit time for the retrieval team, less flying time and fewer stops for the patients. 18 medical personnel included permanent and specialist reserve Air Force members from across Australia took part in the AME consisting of two AME teams, each comprising medical specialists, doctors, nurses, and medical assistants.
