Offical Opening of the Asia Pacific Civil-Military Centre of Excellence

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd today officially opened the Australian Government’s new Asia Pacific Civil-Military Centre of Excellence.

“The Australian Government is committed to fostering peace, stability and security in our neighbourhood and in the broader Asia Pacific region”, the Prime Minister said.

“The Asia Pacific Civil-Military Centre of Excellence will enhance the effectiveness of Australia’s civilian and military collaboration to prevent, mitigate and respond to the impact of natural disasters and conflicts in the region.”

The establishment of the Centre, which is located in Queanbeyan, New South Wales, marks the achievement of another Australian Government election commitment.

“It will provide an important supportive role within the Department of Defence, and for other relevant Australian agencies, through its focus on civil-military research, training programs and the development of doctrine”, Mr Rudd said.

The Centre will be staffed by Australian Government personnel with expertise on civil-military issues, and will develop partnerships with a range of non government organisations, and with regional and international institutions.

Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Support and Federal Member for Eden-Monaro, the Hon Dr Mike Kelly AM MP, said the Centre’s location in Queanbeyan provides it with excellent access to Government agencies in Canberra and with the Defence Force Joint Operations Centre in Bungendore.

“Queanbeyan is now the host of an exciting initiative that is fundamentally about improving security and development outcomes for communities in the Asia-Pacific region”, he said.
