HMAS Sydney II Memorial Service - Ceremonial Sunset
The HMAS SYDNEY II memorial in Geraldton, Western Australia, was the scene of a commemorative sunset ceremony. The ceremony concluded a day of memorial activities dedicated to the 645 crewman who lost their lives on HMAS SYDNEY II in battle against the German Raider HSK KORMORAN.
Bathed in the purple light of sunset, the memorial’s Dome of Souls was the scene of a poignant wreath laying ceremony, as Geraldton school children read the names of all the crewmembers, honouring their sacrifice 67 years ago.
Dignitaries including the Governor-General of Australia, Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC, the Hon. Joel Fitzgibbon MP, Minister for Defence, and Vice Admiral Russ Crane AM CSN RAN, the Chief of Navy, joined the relatives of the crew and members of the public to pay their respects.
The event was concluded with a flypast by four RAAF Pilatus aircraft over the memorial from over the Indian Ocean.
