EX LONG GUNS 2008 High Range, Townsville

Exercise Long Guns 2008 saw artillery from Australia and New Zealand grouped together to produce some very impressive fire-power at the High Range Training Area near Townsville on the 7th of  November 2008.

The largest combined gunnery concentration in Australia for a number of years featured Australian Army 1st Division, Royal Australian Artillery units and the Royal New Zealand Army’s 161st Field Battery.

Known as Exercise Long Guns, the aim of the activity was  to maintain and enhance the already high standards of timely, accurate and safe indirect fire support that is available to the soldiers on the ground from both the Australian Defence Force and the New Zealand Defence Force.

The four Australian  units involved were the Townsville based 4th Field Regiment, the Darwin based 8/12th medium Regiment, the Brisbane based 1st Field Regiment and the 20th Surveillance, Targeting and Acquisition Regiment.

All of  these units were recently involved in providing fire-support during the recent Exercise Swift Eagle 2008 held in Far North Queensland’s Cowley Beach and High Range Training facility, Townsville.
