C-17A Globemaster transports Puma Helicopters from Johannesburg

As part of Operation NARGIS ASSIST, a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) C-17A Globemaster aircraft from No. 36 Squadron based at RAAF Base Amberley, Queensland, flew to Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa, to transport two SA330J Puma Helicopters to Bangkok, Thailand, following a request from the United Nations World Food Programme.
The helicopters will be used to deliver humanitarian assistance to the worst cyclone-affected areas in Burma on behalf of the United Nations.
Operation NARGIS ASSIST is the Australian Defence Force contribution to the Australian Government’s response to the devastation in Burma caused by Cyclone Nargis.
On 13 May 2008 a RAAF C-17 Globemaster aircraft delivered over 30 tonnes of humanitarian aid supplies to Burma following an acceptance of Australian aid by the Burmese Government.
