Army soldiering on after 107 years
03 March 2008
The Australian Army will celebrate 107 years of service to the nation on 1 March 2008, with a parade to follow in Canberra on Monday. The occasion marks the day that authorisation for the formation of the Commonwealth Military Force was decreed in 1901.
In a time where the operational tempo is high, Chief of Army, Lieutenant General Peter Leahy, said the birthday remains a noteworthy event in the Defence calendar.
The Army is a national institution that has played an important role in shaping the way Australia is viewed throughout the world. Celebrating our birthday is a significant event in the nation’s calendar, Lieutenant General Leahy said.
The Army birthday is important as it provides an opportunity to reflect on our previous achievements and focus on current and future endeavours.
We pause to remember the dedication of soldiers who fought for Australia in past conflicts and pay our respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.
Similarly, the Army birthday is a chance to recognise the substantial contribution of current serving members whose dedication and professionalism is making a difference in operational theatres all over the world.
Army members constitute a large portion of the 3500 Defence personnel serving on overseas operations, protecting Australia and its national interests. Those members who are not currently deployed are involved in support of operational personnel as well as training activities in Australia and domestic operations in various regions around the country.
