Sean was one of more than 140 Brisbane-based soldiers deployed to southern Iraq with Overwatch Battle Group (West) Four.
The soldiers were delayed by 11 hours when the chartered aircraft was hit by a bird strike soon after take off on its final leg from Darwin to Brisbane and was forced to return to Darwin Airport.
The soldiers, mainly from the Infantry Combat Team Heeler, finally landed at Brisbane Domestic Terminal at 2am in the early hours of Monday morning.
