Induction of Airbus A330 for Air-Air Refuelling Modifications

06 June 2008

The Defence Materiel Organisation's (DMO) AIR 5402 Program marked another significant milestone on 6 June 2008, with an induction ceremony to welcome the first Airbus A330 aircraft to Australia for modification to EADS/CASA KC-30B Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) standard. The program will replace the RAAF's Boeing 707 and enhance the air-air refuelling capability of the ADF by providing five new-generation KC-30B MRTT's capable of refuelling current and future aircraft. This aircraft, which is the first of four Airbus A330s to be modified in Australia, arrived at the Qantas Australian Conversion Centre at Brisbane Airport after departing the Airbus facility in Toulouse, France, earlier this week. The A330 to KC-30B MRTT aircraft conversion process comprises over 1,000 job cards (detailed instructions for each task), modification of approximately 2,000 structural parts and 5,500 system parts, nearly 22,000 components delivered to the conversion centre; and installation of over 400 new wiring harnesses with a total of 58km of new cabling. The KC30B also has significant strategic airlift capability, carrying a fuel load of up to 111 tonnes, along with 270 passengers, and a combination of commercial and military cargo pallets in an under-floor cargo compartment.
