Funeral of Sean McCarthy

Mourners congregated at Gold Coast’s Sacred Heart Church today for the funeral of Singaller Sean McCarthy, who was tragically killed in Afghanistan.

The church was filled to capacity as family, friends and colleagues of Sean came together to pay their respects to a dedicated soldier who will be remembered for his service and sacrifice.

Attending to pay their respects to Sean were The Hon Kevin Rudd MP, Prime Minister of Australia; The Hon Dr Brendan Nelson MP, Leader of the Opposition; The Hon. Dr Mike Kelly MP, The Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Support; Mrs Margaret May, Federal Member for McPherson; Mr Stuart Robert, Federal Member for Fadden; and The Hon. Paul Lucas MP, Deputy Premier of Queensland.

Lieutenant General David Hurley, The Vice Chief of the Defence Force; Lieutenant General Ken Gillespie, The Chief of Army; and Major General Tim McOwan, Special Operations Commander Australia were also present to pay their respects to the 25 year old soldier.

The cortege carrying Sean’s casket was met by an SASR honour guard. During the service, family and friends recounted stories and paid tribute to Sean.
