Sean McCarthy Ramp Ceremony

13 July 2008

A solemn ceremony at the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) base at Tarin Kowt saw the commencement of the repatriation of Signaller (SIG) Sean McCarthy.

In the relentless heat of the Afghan summer, Australian and their Coalition allies stood unwavering as they fare-welled SIG Sean McCarthy.

SIG Sean McCarthy from the Special Air Services Regiment (SASR) was serving with the Special Operations Task Group (SOTG) when he was killed in an attack by Taliban extremists in Oruzgan Province using an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).

Following the memorial service a SOTG patrol vehicle bearing SIG McCarthy's casket and a procession of his SOTG colleagues passed solemnly along the route lined by members of the Australian Reconstruction Task Force and representatives of coalition forces in Oruzgan.

SIG McCarthy's casket was then carried by eight of his mates at a slow march past his fellow SOTG members into the back of an Australian C-130 Hercules aircraft that would begin the journey home to Australia.
