Army Reservists return from Malaysia

21 February 2008

Sydney-based Army Reservists made up a large part of the 120-plus contingent that landed on Saturday, February 9 at RAAF Base Richmond in Sydney after a three-month tour of duty in Malaysia.

The soldiers were part of Rifle Company Butterworth Rotation 80 which operated from the Royal Malaysian Air Force base at Butterworth.

The soldiers from the 8th and 5th Brigade carried out months of intensive training, including company exercises and bi-lateral exercises with the Royal Malaysian Regiment.

Eighth Brigade Commander Brigadier Iain Spence said that Rifle Company Butterworth is a much sought-after deployment by soldiers from across the Eighth Brigade, and other parts of the 2nd Division, and the Rotation 80 soldiers acquitted themselves particularly well.

"I am proud of these Army Reservists who have served their country well for three months in often arduous and trying conditions and pleased they are home safe with loved ones," Brigadier Spence said.

"They gave up their time for Australia's security and provided soldiers from the Regular Army a much-needed break over Christmas during this high-tempo period.

"These Army Reservists participated in a very worthwhile activity which occurs largely because of the tremendous support of their employers, who clearly understand the importance of the Reserve to our national security."

After two weeks leave to unwind from their military service, which involved jungle patrolling, combined arms training, survival training and an exercise with the Malaysian Army, most from the contingent have now returned to their civilian occupations.
