Rapid deployment to Timor-Leste

12 February 2008

The Australian Defence Force has deployed additional elements to Timor-Leste in response to a direction from the Australian Government to provide forces that will bolster the authority of the Timor-Leste Government and provide additional support to security forces in Timor.

The Australian Army is deploying up to 200 soldiers, based predominantly on a Rifle Company drawn from the Sydney-based 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, to Timor-Leste. The deployment of these forces follows attacks on the President and Prime Minister in Dili on 11 February.

The Royal Australian Air Force will provide strategic and operational airlift capabilities through the use of its C-17 and C-130 fleet.

The Royal Australian Navy's HMAS PERTH is currently in the vicinity of Dili Harbour and is prepared to support this mission.
