Minister paves the way at Pacific 2008 congress

The Navy’s future amphibious ships, greater maritime capabilities and the importance of personnel retention were just some of the subjects presented by the Minister for Defence at the Pacific 2008 Congress in Sydney where Defence leaders and industrialists have gathered to discuss current technologies and maritime security.

Speaking to the large audience, the Hon. Joel Fitzgibbon MP used his formal address to discuss the key issues within his portfolio, highlighting the drafting of a new White Paper on future spending and the capabilities that the new amphibious ships will bring.

Mr Fitzgibbon also discussed Defence force retention and increasing the number of women in senior ranks saying it was a challenge that we can’t afford not to tackle.

Australia and its maritime interests: at home and overseas was the theme of the Pacific 2008 Congress held in Sydney from 29-31January. Delegates representing 32 countries met for informal discussions on the future shape of martime security.

More than 400 exhibitors showcased the latest in defence technology from ships to helicopters, from immersion suits to maintenance free electrical connectors. Over 10,000 people visited the exposition during the event, demonstrating the great interest in global maritime security and the capabilities of the worlds Navy in the near future.
