BRAVEHEARTS CAVALCADE – HMAS CAIRNS ASSISTANCE

On Saturday 20 December, HMAS Cairns (CMDR Bob Heffey) personnel participated in Operation RUDOLF. A tireless Mr Bernard O’Connor (PRO), LCDR Ted Cummins (XO) and ABHSO Luke Heard with more than two dozen emergency and service vehicles formed the Bravehearts cavalcade. Navy joined with Army, Queensland Police, Australian Federal Police, Queensland Fire and Rescue service, charity Sherriff’s cars, Airport Fire Service, SES and Santa in a pink Cadillac touring Cairns to raise awareness and funds for Braveheats.

Bravehearts is specifically set up to cater for children who have been sexually assaulted, and to educate children towards the prevention of sexual assault. Operation RUDOLF raised funds to support this community service in Far North Queensland.

Money was raised at stopping points at Cairns Esplanade, Machans Beach, Holloways Beach, Yorkeys Knob, Trinity Beach, Smithfield Shopping Centre, Kewarra Beach, Clifton Beach and at Palm Cove Esplanade. Navy’s detour to Yorkeys Golf Club was a successful sidetrack and donations were received from everyone at the 19th hole. Many families came out to see the cavalcade of vehicles. As night fell the flashing lights of emergency vehicles became more than a visual cacophony, representing a light of hope in the community. Awareness of Op RUDOLF and Bravehearts was increased with constant radio coverage throughout the cavalcade. The strong support by families lining the streets also demonstrated strong support for the participating organisations.
