Air drop from C-17A Globemaster over Londonderry, NSW

The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) fleet of C-17A Globemaster III aircraft are currently undergoing role-expansion to include tactical airlift missions, including the airborne delivery of cargo.

RAAF C-17As commenced training in this role in the United States in early 2008.

On Friday, 5 December 2008, a RAAF C-17A of No. 36 Squadron conducted two airdrops over the Londonderry Drop Zone, west of Sydney. On both passes, the aircraft dropped a pair of Container Delivery System (CDS) stores over the drop zone. The C-17A can hold up to 40 stores.
