Abrams tank takes to railway link
29 April 2008
An M1A1 Abrams Tank and a M88A2 "Hercules" Armoured Recovery Vehicle were successfully loaded onto purpose-built rolling stock during the final railway transport trial at Berrimah Rail Yard in the Northern Territory.
Conducted by soldiers from 1st Armoured Regiment and local Freight Link rail workers, the successful activity marked the final stage of the tank rail capability.
This trial included a return transit to Katherine on the Territory rail network, under close observation of Army transport personnel.
The utilisation of rail transport will provide another means of transporting 1st Brigade's Abrams Tanks south, in an efficient and timely manner.
