Why does the Air Force operate a hot-air balloon? Every year the Air Force receives many requests for support that simply cannot be met with conventional aircraft, either because they can not be spared or because of remote localities. This is where the RAAF Balloon fits in. It travels to more than 25 events a year, varying from small community events through to military air shows and major civilian events. At other times the balloon is used for local flying training in Canberra.
