Darwin soldiers train with the crocodiles

18 April 2008

For 14 soldiers from the 1st Combat Signal Regiment at Robertson Barracks in Darwin, wrestling saltwater crocodiles became all in a days work.

The team-building adventure training exercise assisted Darwin's Crocodylus Park in the transport and cataloguing of over 200 saltwater crocodiles from a communal enclosure they had outgrown.

The crocodile's notorious local reputation was braved by the soldiers, attracting local media interest to promote the Top End facility's valuable research on the reptile.

Lieutenant James Tewes from the unit's 104 Signal Squadron used the activity as part of the troop's adventure training schedule, providing a physical and psychological challenge whilst introducing the members to real and perceived risk under trained supervision.

"You can't do this type of activity by yourself, so it's a great exercise to emphasis the Army value of working as a team," Lieutenant Tewes said.
