Exercise Southern Reach
13 September 2007
During the period 20 August - 30 November, soldiers from the 1st Brigade are participating in Exercise Southern Reach, a training activity in the Cultana Field Training Area, South Australia.
The number of personnel currently training in Cultana has now peaked at approximately 1000 personnel for the Combat Training Centre’s Heavy Battle Group Rotation taking place from 8 - 21 September.
There are also approximately 143 armoured vehicles at Cultana for Exercise Southern Reach including 31 Abrams Tanks, 18 ASLAVs, and 82 M113 Armoured Personnel Carriers.
The 1st Brigade is the Australian Army’s mechanised Brigade which operates armoured vehicles and conducts combined combat arms missions involving armoured, cavalry, infantry and artillery soldiers and equipment. Combined training is very important to ensure the different specialisations can operate effectively together during combat. In addition the supporting elements that are participating in the exercise including engineers, logistics, communications and services support units.
