Safe waters in the Solomons

25 October 2007

A 100lb bomb has been safely disposed of by Royal Australian Navy Clearance Divers, hard at work in the Solomon Islands.

During the past three weeks, divers from Australian Clearance Diving Team Four (AUSCDT4) in conjunction with Solomon Island Police Force (SIPF) Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technicians have been disposing of unexploded ordnance in the area.

The bomb was left over from the Second World War and was one of over 400 projectiles and mortars discovered. These items represented a significant hazard to the people living in the communities and villages of the Western Province.

The training and disposal tasks were conducted as part of the Defence Cooperation programme between the Australian Defence Force and the Solomon Islands.

Five SIPF personnel were selected to conduct the training, commencing with a local civilian PADI diving course to learn how to SCUBA dive. This gave them the basic skills to dive, and, combined with their considerable skill and experience in surface EOD; these policeman were about to learn how to put their abilities to use disposing of ordnance in the water.
