Amphibious ships for Navy

The Prime Minister, Mr John Howard and the CEO of Tenix, Mr Greg Hayes signed the contract for the delivery of two Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) ships to the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).

The signing was conducted onboard HMAS Kanimbla berthed at Tenix’s Williamstown Dockyard, Melbourne.

Also in attendance was Minister for Defence the Hon Dr Brendan Nelson and the Chief of Navy Vice Admiral Russ Shalders.

The LHDs will replace HMA Ships Kanimbla and Manoora. They will be known as the Canberra Class with the first ship bearing the class name and the second bearing the name HMAS Adelaide.
