Inaugural Chief Military Judge and two permanent judges sworn into the Australian Military Court

03 October 2007

The first Chief Military Judge of the Australian Military Court, Brigadier Ian Westwood AM, was officially sworn into his position at a ceremony in Canberra today.

Also sworn in were the two permanent military judges, Colonel Peter Morrison and Lieutenant Colonel Jennifer Woodward.

Brigadier Westwood was appointed to the statutory position by the Governor-General on 22 August 2007, and sworn in by the Judge Advocate General-ADF, Major General Richard Tracey during today’s ceremony.

“Brigadier Westwood has shown outstanding service in his role as the Chief Judge Advocate prior to his appointment as the Chief Military Judge. I am confident he will continue to do so during the 10-year term of this appointment,” Mr Billson said.

“As the inaugural Chief Military Judge of the Australian Military Court, Brigadier Westwood will be responsible for, among other things, ensuring the orderly and expeditious discharge of the business of the Australian Military Court and managing the administrative affairs of the court.”

The Chief of the Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston said Brigadier Westwood will also sit as a military judge on the Court, nominate the military judge to conduct the trial of charges that are referred to the Australian Military Court and report to Parliament annually through the Minister.

“In addition, Colonel Morrison and Lieutenant Colonel Woodward have an extensive wealth of legal experience, combining a mix of both private and military practice. I am sure they will both do an outstanding job in their new roles”, Air Chief Marshal Houston said.

Mr Billson said the new Australian Military Court would provide the ADF with a fair and impartial military court reflecting a world’s best practice for military court administration.
