Mission training for next Overwatch Battle Group in Iraq
02 October 2007
Overwatch Battle Group (West) (OBG(W)-4) will be led by the Enoggera-based 2nd/14th Light Horse Regiment in what is the first Australian Light Horse battle group since 1918.
The addition of the infantry support from the 6th Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment, also from Enoggera, makes it the first wholly Brisbane-based battle group of the Australian Army's modern era.
The mission-specific training exercise held at Shoalwater Bay Training Area was the first field training conducted by the battle group in its preparation for Iraq.
The current OBG(W) is based in the southern Iraq Province of Dhi Qar and comprises about 515 personnel and consists of a headquarters, a cavalry squadron, an infantry company, Australian Light Armoured Vehicles and the Bushmaster Infantry Mobility Vehicle.
The battle group is based at Tallil Air Base from which it undertakes the security overwatch role for the Al Muthanna and Dhi Qai Provinces as part of a larger Coalition force.
