Private Luke Worsley honoured during return to Australia

30 November 2007

Australian soldier Private (PTE) Luke Worsley has been returned to his family in a solemn ceremony held at RAAF Base Richmond.

Soldiers from PTE Worsley's Commando Company formed a Bearer Party, escorting the casket from a C-17 aircraft.

Family and close friends, along with Chief of Army Lieutenant General Peter Leahy, Deputy Special Operations Commander Brigadier Donald Higgins, and Commanding Officer 4th Battalion The Royal Australian Regiment Commando, Lieutenant Colonel Mark Smethurst, attended the ceremony and paid tribute to PTE Worsley on behalf of the entire Australian Army.

Private Worsley, 26, from 4RAR (CDO), was serving with the Special Operations Task Group when he was killed in action during a battle with Taliban extremists in Oruzgan Province, southern Afghanistan.
