V8 Supercar drivers visit Middle East troops

07 November 2007

Ford V8 Supercar drivers Craig Lowndes and Jason Bright joined Holden counterparts Rick Kelly and Greg Murphy in a whirlwind tour of the Overwatch Battle Group-West Three (OBG(W)-3) in Iraq’s Dhi Qar province.

The drivers and Miss V8 Supercar Cherie Mitchell took time after the Desert 400 race in Bahrain to visit about 515 troops of OBG(W)-3 at Camp Terendak, Talil.

After a question and answer session with soldiers, the Ford and Holden drivers jumped behind the wheel in the 'Desert Cup', which pitted a Bushmaster infantry mobility vehicle against an ASLAV in three laps of the Australian compound.

Rick Kelly and Greg Murphy emerged victorious in the Bushmaster 'Runterplausen' under the supervision of Corporal Dan Metcalf, 25, of Townsville’s B Squadron, 3/4 Cavalry Regiment.

The drivers and Miss V8 Supercar autographed hats, posters and t-shirts for the assembled motor racing fans.

The battle group mostly comprises soldiers from Darwin’s 5th Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment and the 2nd Cavalry Regiment.

The OBG (W)-3 has been ready to support Iraqi Security Forces in Dhi Qar and Al Muthanna provinces.
