Indigenous memorial in Northern Territory
01 June 2007
Many indigenous soldiers seeking to serve their country would not acknowledge their cultural origins, if they could pass as European to enlist. Other indigenous soldiers would register as Malaysian or Maori to find service.
Wreaths of remembrance were laid by senior Northern Command officers including Commander Australian Navy Patrol Boat Group, Captain Aaron Ingram RAN, and Commanding Officer of NORFORCE Lieutenant Colonel Mick Rozolli to honour the unrecorded and unrecognised service of many indigenous Australians in the First and Second World Wars.
The ceremony was attended by NORFORCE soldiers and indigenous veterans from across the Top End
