NAIDOC memorial service

16 July 2007

Defence and The National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) held a memorial service to honour Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) servicemen and servicewomen at the ATSI Memorial, located in bushland 350 metres behind the Australian War Memorial towards Mount Ainslie in Canberra.

A commemorative service was held at the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Memorial in Canberra to pay tribute to indigenous men and women who proudly served the Australian nation.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the Australian Defence Force (ADF) share a common desire that has been encapsulated in the unified theme of Protecting Country.

Protecting Country embraces the everyday need to protect and preserve the basic elements of land, air and water that make up the continent of Australia. For the ADF, these are reflected in the Army,Air Force and Navy elements available to defend our nation.

Equally in a military context, indigenous men and women have proudly served our nations Defence force since early colonial days, and have continued to serve in more recent times in all areas of operation on peacetime duties and in war.
