Shave for a Cure at HMAS Albatross

05 July 2007

A wind chill factor of about 10 degrees Celsius tested the tenacity of Warrant Officer Gary Bromley after he lost his locks for the annual Shave for a Cure at HMAS Albatross.

WO Bromley knew just how warm his beard and hair had kept him for the past few years, so the hirstute Senior Warrant Officer at the base issued a challenge to personnel to raise more than $5000 for the important cancer charity.

The target was more than surpassed, with more than $10,000 in the coffers at day's end.

When the fundraising reached $7500, Chief Petty Officer Deb Butterworth lopped off her own blonde locks, and at $10,000 Brian Holland, a civilian at the base, agreed to go baldly where he had never gone before.

The Shave for a Cure has been running at HMAS Albatross since 2001 after it was initiated by Lieutenant Craig King, who had then been diagnosed with myeloid leukaemia.

Lt King passed away in August 2002, but in his memory the personnel at HMAS Albatross have continued the event, raising tens of thousands of dollars for the Leukaemia Foundation.
